Mark Guenin's Nomination
Submitted by Robert Johnson

I am proud to nominate Mark C. Guenin for the Hoosier Freedom Award. I have watched Mark’s law practice transform over the last 25 years I have gotten to know him. Mark has been practicing for more than four decades advancing the cause of justice in Indiana through fearless advocacy, mentorship, and service. His storytelling is legendary. Growing up on a farm in rural Wabash County, Mark developed his understanding of law and justice early, including a memorable encounter at age 12, when the town marshal pulled him over for driving a grain truck. The marshal ultimately sent him home with a warning and to tell his dad hi. From this young age, Mark cultivated not just a healthy respect for the law, but an even deeper commitment to justice itself.

Mark has built his practice on the fundamental belief that every person deserves to be treated justly, and that when laws fall short of providing justice, attorneys have a duty to change them. Through countless personal injury and wrongful death trials throughout Indiana and beyond, he has distinguished himself not only through exceptional results, but through his unwavering commitment to preparing every case with compassion—always centering the client's lived experience.

Mark's vision and leadership have shaped broader access to justice initiatives across Indiana. He was instrumental in launching the Summit for Rural Justice and Public Health, an innovative initiative designed to address the systemic challenges faced by underserved communities statewide. This groundbreaking work has brought critical resources and attention to rural justice issues that had long been overlooked.

As president of the Wabash County Bar Association and a member of the Indiana State Bar Association's House of Delegates, Mark has helped shape local and statewide policy, ensuring that rural perspectives are heard and respected in decisions affecting Indiana's legal landscape. His advocacy has created meaningful change for communities that previously lacked a strong voice in policy discussions.

Beyond the courtroom, Mark is renowned throughout the trial bar for his extraordinary generosity in sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues. He is a frequent speaker at seminars, consistently offering creative strategies and fresh perspectives on complex legal issues. On professional listservs, Mark is invariably among the first to respond when colleagues seek guidance—offering innovative ideas and collaborative problemsolving. His willingness to mentor younger attorneys and "carry briefcases" reflects his deep belief in the collaborative nature of legal work and his commitment to the profession's future. This courageous approach to mentorship has shaped countless careers and strengthened the entire Indiana trial bar.

For his lifelong dedication to client advocacy, his tireless efforts to expand access to justice in rural Indiana, and his exceptional generosity toward fellow attorneys, Mark Guenin exemplifies the spirit of the Hoosier Freedom Award. Through innovative initiatives, groundbreaking advocacy, and courageous leadership, his career has made Indiana a more just, more connected, and more compassionate place—both to practice law and to live.
