State Senator Jon Ford
Nominated by Bob Johnson
I nominate Senator Jon Ford (R-Terre Haute) for the 2022 ITLA Legislator of the Year.
On February 15th, 2022, the House Family, Children and Human Affairs committee hijacked Senate Bill 266 authored by Senator Ford. As the bill passed the Senate SB 266 dealt with the base rate that the Department of Child Services pays providers. By the time the bill ultimately passed the House, the bill contained provisions to provide civil immunity to all Department of Child Service contactors. Throughout the entire process, Senator Ford made it clear that he felt the provision was bad public policy and that he would not allow his bill to be used for that purpose.
In the face of strong pressure from House Leadership, Senator Ford stood his ground and demanded that the provision be removed in the Conference Committee.
My colleagues in ITLA who may take on a DCS case in the future owe a great deal of gratitude to Senator Ford for ensuring the doors to the courthouse will remain open for these vulnerable children. Not only would this policy have hurt future cases, but it would have also undermined children’s safety. This bill, as it passed, retains accountability for contractors that serve Hoosier children in need of services.
It is with all of this in mind, it is my pleasure to nominate Senator Jon Ford as the 2022 ITLA Legislator of the Year.
